Camellia Time

Early spring is the time of year we get to marvel in the beauty of our camellias in the deep South. This is a beautiful flower. Stately with just a hint of pink. It was tagged incorrectly; it looks a lot like Moonlight Bay further down the page.

Melissa Anne has a large white flower with ruffled petals.

I have been anxious for these delicate rose-like blooms to open before we have more bad weather. Here it is today: Moonlight Bay! Extraordinary!

Fleeting February

Well, here I am again after Christmas, New Year's, ski trips, baby fun, etc. It's hard to believe how busy life is and how rapidly the days are going by! I'm so thankful for all these great experiences and just the ho-hum every day stuff, too!

Maybe I can cover the lack of blog posts with some photos!

We had a wonderful few days together with Ashley, David, Annette, Lee, and Philip and Amanda over the Christmas weekend! I was also on call . . . so I think everything went well, but ---alas, I didn't manage to take many pictures! Here are Annette and Lee at their holiday visit with Santa. This is one of my favorite captured moments! They are just not sure what this is all about. Annette is checking out Santa and Lee is taking his cues from Annette. How innocent and adorable!

Here's my Dad with Annette and Lee. We were having Christmas Eve celebration at Cathy's. I do remember what a nice time we had with our Nimmer family gathering. Here's a picture of three very special men in my life!

New Year's found us travelling to Atlanta for a disappointing bowl game for the Gamecocks. It was all Auburn - all the time. We did ring in the New Year and continue to anticipate that it will be one filled with joy for all our loved ones!

No need to remind everyone that January and early February have been uncommonly cold. The new growth on our plants and the camellias beginning to show their stuff has certainly put me in a better mood and I can't wait to get in the yard and plant some new herbs and annuals, and bring all the ferns back outside. Thanks to Philip, we have some beautiful camellias in the yard. Here is one of our favorites: Frank Houser is its name.

Speaking of cold, we had a wonderful trip to Colorado for a pediatrics continuing education conference. The change of scenery was welcome. Amanda and Philip, Jr. were able to travel with us which was an added bonus. Here are a few pictures from that journey!

Bonus Recipe

My favorite easy and quick CHICKEN PARMESAN !!!!

This is an adaptation of a recipe I found on Allrecipes.com. I like to use chicken tenders instead of breasts.

Whisk 2 eggs and dip chicken pieces (about 8-10 chicken tenders) in egg wash, then coat with bread crumb mixture: 1-2 cups Italian bread crumbs mixed with about 1 cup fresh grated Parmesan cheese (out of the bag, NOT the can).

Heat 2-3 Tablespoons vegetable oil in skillet. Place coated chicken pieces in oil (medium heat) and saute until cooked through. 3-4 minutes on each side.

Spray an oblong pyrex dish with PAM and place cooked chicken pieces in pyrex dish. Cover with 16-24 oz. of your favorite pasta sauce. I never know what kind to buy. (Usually whatever is on sale!) This was Bertolli's Fire Roasted Tomato with Cabernet. I have to admit it was very good!

Then bake at 375 degrees for about 20 minutes - covered with foil. Remove from oven and cover with shredded or sliced mozzarella cheese. Back to oven only long enough to melt the cheese.

Serve with a crunchy wedge salad and some toasty bread! Very simple and delicious, I promise!! Enjoy!

November Reprise

Wow! It is the end of November and no blog post!
I'll have to work fast!

First, Happy Thanksgiving to everyone. I am thankful for so much, but especially my family and so many dear friends. You all enrich my life and I treasure each of you! I'll have many great memories of this Thanksgiving as we spent time and enjoyed traditional Thanksgiving fare with each of our families. We enjoyed a hayride after lunch at Grays. This photo of all the "Thomas cousins" provided a real "Kodak moment".

Knitting Update: Working (slowly) on Jane Slicer-Smith's "Boxes Drape". I am liking the yarn and get the feel for how "drapey" it will be . . . and can't wait to see it finished!

We also enjoyed spending time with Annette and Lee while Ashley and David went to Carolina-Clemson football game and had a little time off. Here they are at breakfast!

Now it is time to prepare for the Christmas season . As we ready our hearts to celebrate the birth of the Christ child, we can enjoy some other favorites of the season . . .

I am very excited to be finishing a few projects! It is nice to feel a sense of accomplishment, but I think even more exciting to anticipate beginning new projects!

Just finished: Citron - pattern by Hillary Callis Smith.

Ashley was kind enough to use her photography skills to provide me with these flattering photos! The yarn used for this project was "Steele" by Creatively Dyed Yarns. Colorway: Vallejo.

I am thoughtfully considering the possible options of how to use this in the wardrobe. I haven't quite solved that dilemna. Any thoughts?

We also had fun last weekend with Ashley, David, Annette and Lee visiting. Here are the "babies" playing on Grandma's porch . . . They are dressed to cheer on the Gamecocks vs Vanderbilt later in the day.

I have several thoughts about a new project. I am looking forward to trying something by designer Jane Slicer-Smith. In Swing, Swagger, and Drape there are some challenging and lengthy projects. I am going to start with one that looks the least intimidating in size and required skills: Boxes Drape. (Check the link for great photographs of all the projects in the book!) Now, I would prefer to wear this free-flowing and drapey, but as you can see from the photo, there are options for styling!

Will share photos of yarn (purchased at Stitches South) and cast on as soon as that is done . . . excitement, can't wait!

HAPPY FIRST BIRTHDAY TO ANNETTE AND LEE

I truly can't believe it has been an entire year since we welcomed Annette and Lee into our lives. This year has been a great journey for those two precious babies and all their family and friends. When I remember their first days in the NICU and then their first days at home and think about how much they have grown and learned it brings tears to my eyes. They started this earthly journey a little early, but they have grown in so many ways and given more love than I can imagine.

Annette and Lee are both very mobile now. They crawl all over the house and laugh when you "chase them down the hall"! They have been pulling up on the furniture for a while and are enjoying their toys, especially the ones with music. They both try to dance by bouncing up and down. Annette likes to move her head back and forth in time to the music. I'm sure she'll make an appearance soon on "Dancing with the Stars". She like to clap her hands and play pat-a-cake. Lee hasn't quite gotten the hand movements down, but he loves playing and singing, too. They both laugh out loud when they're held upside down for a few seconds.

Formula is going away soon and so far they seem to like milk. They have loved their bottles, but they are adjusting to using sippy cups. I think it will be an easy transition. They both are good eaters and feed themselves table food. They like just about everything, but especially cheese, yogurt, pancakes, cut up fruit, peas, etc.

They are still taking two naps and sleep well at night. Teething has given a little interference, but they are very sweet babies and really fun to be around. They are both beginning to babble some syllables, but I don't think any real words yet. Lee really likes to squeal if he is happy and excited!

"Got cake???" This is one of my all time favorite pictures. He is so intent and just doesn't know what to think about all the fuss and excitement. I laugh every time I see it!

Ashley found some really cute party decorations. Of course there was one of everything for Annette and for Lee!

SMOCKING

I have been working feverishly to finish Annette's Autumn bubble to go with Lee's Fall Tractor outfit (see previous post). Finally, it is done!

The unsmocked garment was purchased at Rosalina's in Summerville, S.C. Then I have smocked a rendition of "Leave it to Us" by Little Memories Smocking Designs. I modified the template by leaving off a few acorns and the smocked borders due to less space to smock on this 12mo size bubble. I could not be more pleased with the rich fall colors.

Now that sewing is done, I can return to finish a few knitting projects that sorely need to be completed. Can't wait!

Happy Labor Day!!

We enjoyed spending a little time with Ashley, David, and Annette and Lee in Aiken this weekend.
It is so hard to believe that the twins are almost a year old. They are changing so rapidly: both are crawling and "pulling up" on the furniture. They both like eating "real food" and feeding themselves. They are learning to use sippy cups, but still have a great fondness for their bottles.

White Trumpet

Just wanted to share a few pictures I took this morning of this white trumpet plant showing off its new blooms. I have read in some places this grows as a weed. Also, parts of the plants are poisonous - so beware!!

Favorite Pork Chop Casserole
I thought it would be nice to share one of our favorite family recipes. Sister Cathy says there is no way to mess this up!! I found this recipe in one of my grandmother's cookbooks about thirty years ago. My apologies to it's author - - I have no recollection of the name of that book!

Baked Pork Chops - Arabian

First make a pot of your favorite wild rice. I use Uncle Ben's. Go ahead and gather the other ingredients:

4 pork chops
1 bell pepper - sliced
1 onion - sliced
1 tomato - sliced

Season the chops with salt and pepper. Seasoned salt is great.

Then place a slice of tomato on top of each pork chop.

Then a big spoonful of the rice . . .

Next comes a slice of onion and green pepper . . .

Cover the casserole with aluminum foil and bake at 325 degrees F. for 1 1/2 to 2 hours. Imagine the aroma in the house.

When it's time to eat, place a slice of cheddar cheese on top of each portion and let it melt briefly.

Voila . . .it's ready for the plate!! Enjoy!

Just for fun!!

I decided to take a break from all my complicated knitting projects and knit a cute dishcloth. Fun, simple, and quick!! I used some leftover cotton yarn ( Blue Sky Alpacas - organic cotton). Pattern by Claudia Lang is a free download on Ravelry.

Lace Tea Towel

Before . . .

Blocking once again makes a huge impression on me! This is the linen tea towel that I've been working on for a few months. It is not perfect, but I do like the way the linen worked up. It softened and, of course, looked totally transformed after the blocking.

After . . .

I have duplicate stitched a monogram on the lower panel , but not happy with the results so far. Will post picture once that issue is resolved. Details on yarn, etc. can be found at my ravelry project page.

WATER FESTIVAL

Once again the festivities of the Beaufort Water Festival arrived. Philip, Jr. brought several friends to share the weekend and we had fun spending some time with them at the river.

Project Update

Fourth of July

It's never too late to celebrate Independance Day!! We had a beautiful day to celebrate with family and friends. There was plenty of barbecue and all the trimmings. Then the fireworks gave us a thrill! Our precious freedom should not be taken lightly (or taken for granted)!! I am so thankful for those who sacrificed for the freedoms that we enjoy everyday!

So what have I been doing in all my spare time?? I finally got to this cute (and quick!) sundress project. It still needs ribbon trim around the hem.

Ashley had requested two pillow shams some time ago. I am really pleased with how these turned out. She had chosen the fabric. . . and once we decided what to center, they were pretty simple. The measuring and cutting was the most difficult part. I can't wait to see them in the bedroom she is decorating!

There has been a long-time, ongoing project of the "linen tea towel" with linen yarn and pattern from Barbara Sue Brodie's in Aiken, SC. The towel is not extremely impressive at this point, but I can't wait to see how it changes with blocking. You can see I have begun working on the lace edging for the towel. I think I will sew it on and then block it all at one time. The lace is really nice and will add a lot to this project. Knitting the lace has been a little challenging. There is a p4tog (purl 4 together) component that is a little hairy. We will get it done !

Last, but not least, I have cast on a new project . . . Citron by Hillary Smith Callis. This was a Knitty project in Winter 2009. There are many beautiful examples of this on Ravelry. I chose a brightly colored yarn from Creatively Dyed Yarn - Steele in the colorway Vallejo. It is 100% superwash merino and comes from a local artisan in Greer, S. C.

It will be fun to watch this one grow!! Have a happy weekend!!

Fifty-five years . . . and Counting

I am so proud to use a little blog space today to congratulate our parents, Joan and Fred, on FIFTY-FIVE years of marriage. They have quietly put down their roots and been wonderful role models for their children, grandchildren, and now great-grandchildren. We salute them for all their accomplishments, not the least of which is teaching us how to put FAITH and FAMILY at the forefront!
So on Friday evening, June 25, we gathered to celebrate their milestone.

Fun at Grandmas

Annette and Lee have been visiting for the past few days while their mom and dad have been away at a relative's wedding. We have had so much fun playing and watching them change almost everyday.

Annette is VERY close to crawling . . .

I have been madly trying to finish Annette's "poncho" or winter cape. Details are on Ravelry. Here is a picture after beginning to bind off. That is such a cute frilly ruffle around the bottom edge. I counted almost 1000 stitches around before I began to bind off. It was a little challenging to push around the needles.

Surely will be finished soon . . . hope to have pictures with a precious little model!!

It's a Wrap

One skein of Noro Sock Yarn has evolved into this lovely lacy wrap.

The pattern is One Skein - a Stole by Katja Jordan. I used colorway S184 which is bright pinks, oranges, and peacock blue.

I am always amazed at how fibers transition with blocking. This is the stole drying on the blocking board. My version is this interlocking foam puzzle with blocking wires and many T-pins to hold it in place on the foam.

It dried really fast, so I had to give it several sprays with the water bottle.

It is difficult to see the texture change as much as you can feel it. It is less "puffy" with more discrete stitches and the lace "holes" are more open and obvious. It is also longer after blocking . . . my stole is at least 10 inches longer after blocking today. Total about 64 inches long.

The cast on in the pattern calls for 50 stitches. I cast on 75 to make more like a wrap than a scarf.

So what's next you ask???

Check out this beautiful softness from Tess' Designer Yarns. I purchased these 3 skeins of this hand-dyed Angora and Merino at Stitches South in 2009. It seemed I must use it before starting on stuff I got in 2010.

This is the humble beginnings of a poncho-wrap for Baby Annette - who will be a toddler by winter!

It is from a pattern from the Tess website. This is a beautiful website just to explore. The rainbow of colors is lovely to behold. This yarn is so soft . . . I think I will have a difficult time putting this project down. I expect it to go very fast. . . More pictures to come!!

Spring has Sprung

I am enjoying a little time outside today, despite the pollen and gnats! These bourgainvilleas made it through the winter and are already in full bloom. That is hard to believe, but I am really liking it as they are one of my favorite plants!

I am working on smocked outfits for Annette and Lee. They are "ready-to-smock" products, so I am able to save the time of sewing the garment . . . and enjoy the fun of smocking. I should mention that Susie's Ready to Smock does a GREAT job if anyone is interested in this idea. Here is the website.

The plate I am using on Lee's outfit is "Gone Fishin'" by Ellen McCarn.

I am going to coordinate it with "Row of Fishes" by Nancy Elliott Miller for Annette's bubble outfit. They will be in coordinating colors - but not matching. I can't locate a copy of that smocking plate on the internet. I will post a picture as soon as that is finished.

Last but not least . . . I had a great weekend in Atlanta at Stitches South and Pediatrics Conference (Children's Healthcare of Atlanta). Sister Cathy was wonderful to put up with my crazy yarn shopping and knitting classes AND downtime while I was a pediatrics seminar. I think she also found a few items in her shopping bag by the end of the weekend.

One of my purchases at Stitches was this fun Noro Sock Yarn. It feels sort of coarse and I can't imagine having socks made from it. However, we saw a scarf/stole made from it and thought it was pretty unique and colorful. It will be much more uniform after blocking and lose the puffiness you see here. As always, it is so much fun to watch the rainbow of colors unfold.

Up for Stitches South

Apologies for not getting back to the blog sooner! Life is busy and my camera was missing in action for a few days. Much has transpired since my last post. Here's a quick update . . .

We celebrated Easter with Philip's family . . .

and with my family . . .

Ashley and her Dad went to the Masters . . .

I finished the "Cotswold Vest". More on that later . . .

Started the "Catch the Wave Tee" . . .

And made Annette's first "Lilly" dress . . .

I just can't tell you how proud I was to see her wearing that cute dress!

So . . . tomorrow morning Sister Cathy and I are headed off to Atlanta for a little work and play. The work part will be a pediatrics conference on Saturday and Sunday. Cathy will get to do a little shopping at Lenox Square. The play part for me will be a visit to Stitches South where I will get to ooh and ahh over a convention center full of fabulous fiber, take in a few lessons, and "perhaps" make a few purchases. It would be quite an understatement to say that I am a little bit excited.

Six Months and Growing

About 3 months

As our beautiful twin grandbabies turn 6 months old today, it is time to give them the spotlight on the blog . It is amazing to reflect over the last 6 months and see how they have grown and how much joy they have brought to our family. Annette and Lee are changing rapidly each day it seems. When I miss seeing them for just a week or two I can see such big strides.

It is still heart-warming to see how affectionately they watch one another. They can both light up the room with their smiles and bright blue eyes. Lee is getting his head up a little higher every day during tummy time and Annette has learned to roll over. They are cooing and babbling. She has found some very high pitched squeals which tell us she is SO excited!
They are grabbing rattles and beginning to teethe. . . chewing on their hands other toys.
Lee is the better "eater" of the two. He takes his bottle with gusto and is really liking his baby food. Annette, on the other hand, requires a little more patience to feed. She is a leisurely eater and has to be coaxed into trying the food. She is a petite little elf and he is a cuddly teddy bear.

They both enjoy bath time and kicking in the water. I can't wait to see them swimming this summer. A car ride is a good sedative for them both. They will fall asleep very dependably once the car starts moving.

Another big milestone is that they are both sleeping through the night. THIS IS A BIG MILESTONE!! WOW!! Everyone is really excited about this. Lee edged out Annette on the sleeping routine event . . . he has been a night sleeper for about a month. Annette finally turned the corner about a week ago. WHEW! No more 3 a.m. bottles.

Although we try to limit TV time, I would be remiss not to mention that they are mesmerized by BABY EINSTEIN videos. If nothing else can calm them and a frenzy is in the making - a few minutes of those bright colors, soothing music and motion puts them back in their usual happy state.

They truly are the sweetest creatures imaginable and I am so lucky to be "grandma" to these special little ones. It is hard to believe we have been from NICU isolettes to "exer-saucers" in these six months. I am enjoying every minute and loving what they have brought to our lives! This has been a wonderful blessing and I am thankful during this Easter season for all our many blessings!!

Camellia Time

The cold, rainy winter weather has finally given way to glimpses of springtime. Our camellias still have much growing to do, but Philip's hard work on these plants is beginning to pay off. That being said, it is time to do grafting . . . here's the proof!

Here's one of my favorite blooms. This was planted last spring . . . Harold Paige. This is a very large bloom with very ruffled flower.

Here is a large bloom that we watched in anticipation for days . . . this was a bloom off an un-named plant grafted last spring. It should be really beautiful next year!

I can't wait to get the yard cleaned up and replant some herbs and annuals . . . I am already thinking of fresh basil on fat red tomatoes and dill on new potatoes. This must be the best time of year!!

Old News - Snow in the Lowcountry

We rarely get to glimpse this white stuff here in the South Carolina Lowcountry. Last weekend Mother Nature treated us to a brief encounter with a little snow.

Here are a few sites spotted out and about the river. We haven't had a "ground covering" snow in this area since 1989. Our local squirrel pack seemed totally shocked and disoriented.

The recent cold rainy weather here has not been ideal for the beautiful camellias. Here are a few that haven't been too damaged. They are dusted with a little frosty stuff!

The river looks like glass. There's a dusting of snow on the dock. Pretty tranquil . . . not like tropical storms that rip through here from time to time.

A little farther inland near Grays, the accumulation is a little thicker. This is near the pond at Baybottom.

Cold pines!!

There is a little knitting going on with "Olympics' watching" and staying warm by the fire.

My most active project at the moment is a vest from Oat Couture - Cotswold Vest. I am using some beautiful yarn that I purchased at Stitches South last spring. It is multicolored shepherd worsted by Lorna's Laces. It is hard to believe that wool could be SOOooooo Soft! Hope to post pictures of finished best before too long. Here's a preview. . .

This pattern uses slipped stitches to break up the color runs. I am enjoying learning as I go!

First Felting Phenomenon

I am very excited to report on my very first felting project! This was a great patt!ern to learn a little about felting. Pretty simple, quick, and pleased with the end result! Can't ask for more!

This is "Vintage Bubble Bag" by Eva Weichmann.

Knitting begins in the round . . .

I used Cascade 220 (974 Delphinium) and Noro Silk Garden (273A). The pattern calls for 2 skeins of each. The result is a bulky looking bag - before felting. I made the handles longer than specified in the pattern so that it could be used as a shoulder bag. My handles were approximately 40 inches long.

Hanging on the stair-rail - you can see how "oversized" the bag is . . .

After agitating in the washing machine for 10 minutes (and adding some extra hot water), I could tell the bag was shrinking and the individual stitches were disappearing.

Bubble bag is still drying out, but I am already pleased with the results!

NORO Striped Scarf

I think I've mentioned here before that I like to knit "in color". I just love a bright contrasting kaleidoscope and Noro Yarn is generally a great experience in its visual effects.

I started making this simple, but brightly colored scarf for Sister Cathy before Christmas. Life is busy ; lo it has taken too long to finish it!

I found the idea for this scarf on Jared Flood's blog: Brooklyn Tweed. It is a simple 1 x 1 rib pattern. (K1,P1 through every row using 2 colorways of fiber. Change colorways every 2 rows. The edge is very neat if you slip the first and last stitch of every other row - i.e., row number 2 of every color change.)

I used Noro Kureyon for this scarf in colorways 102, 74, and 220.

I love watching the different color combinations emerge!

Last Saturday was a day of joy and sadness for our family as we witnessed the Baptism of our precious grandbabies - Annette Claire and Thomas Lee. The ceremony in Aiken at St. Mary's Help of Christians was very special. It was a wonderful occasion for our families to be together as we participated in the beginning of the twins' spiritual journey. The babies were "little angels" and extremely happy during their first visit to church. Not a peep did I hear!

Their godparents are David's sister, Julie, and Ashley's brother, Philip Jr. We enjoyed a wonderful little celebration at Ashley and David's after the Baptism.

Later that evening, we were so saddened to receive news of Philip's mother's passing. GaGa was devoted to her family and a wonderful role model for all of us. Philip says she could get her dander up, but she always seemed very calm and reserved to me. She will be missed sorely by all her family and friends.

We are all very grateful for the wonderful support of family and friends during this sad time. We have been comforted by thoughtful cards, beautiful flowers, delicious food, and many words of comfort. Many thanks to everyone!

Holiday Happenings

Happy Holidays!!

December did not fail to meet expectations of a busy, busy holiday season!! I will post a December recap before long. I hope that each of you had a memorable holiday season and will experience many rewarding moments in 2010.

I decided to post a quick little note on my first wool hat for self. This one is to use for anticipated COLD weather as the Gamecocks travel to Birmingham, Alabama for the Papa John's Pizza Bowl. You all know how cold-natured I am . . . as soon as I saw that the high on game day would be around 40 degrees, I began digging out all the long johns, overcoats, wool sweaters and socks!

I thought if I was determined, that I could finish a wool hat in a few days . . . this was from leftover Cascade Ecological Wool that I used for the Hemlock Ring Blanket.

It is knitted in the round on size 7 (for the band) and size 9 needles. The pattern is Ann Norling's "Any Gauge/Any Size Hat".

Getting started . . . I used a 2x2 ribbed band instead of suggested 1x1.

Overall, I am pretty pleased. The hat seems a little large for me, although I followed all the directions closely. There will not be a problem with the hat covering my ears and keeping my head warm. The wool is also very soft and SO "cushy-comfy" feeling on my head!!

The colorful top pom-pom was made with leftover Peruvia Quick by Berroco. I used this to make vest a few months ago.

There are so many great things going on . We are watching everyday to see a few more camellias bloom.

The striped one is Tama Americana. This plant is really showing off right now. It seems appropriate for the holidays with its beautiful dark pink petals outlined in white.

Reminder to Santa

Luke 1:14 And you will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth. Yeah!!! I have finally finished Christmas stockings for Annette and Lee. So sending out this post to remind Santa that there will be two new stockings hanging by the chimney this year!!

Santa needs to know that Grandma Pixie doesn't knit as tightly as Aunt Cathy (who has made these beautiful stockings for our family through the years). The result is that these stockings are a little bigger - - - which means they'll hold a little more loot!!

I am really hoping to finish my Christmas shopping today and then have time to enjoy some of the holiday fun . . . wrapping packages, baking, etc. I may even get brave (and energetic) and try to make a fruit cake.

Thanksgiving 2009

The Thanksgiving holidays have been filled to the brim with good times, good food, and getting together with family and friends! The Thomas family gathered at Grays for Thanksgiving lunch.

We spruced up the cottage with a festive table on the porch.

When everyone arrived we had our traditional Thanksgiving Punch and these pecan-topped cheese biscuits. The recipe is a rendition of Cocktail Cheese Biscuits from one of my favorite cookbooks Savannah Style. We have enjoyed these on Thanksgiving Day for years. I usually make this dough a few days ahead and keep it refrigerated until time for baking. Here are the ingredients - altered slightly from the original recipe:

Cocktail Cheese Biscuits

1/2 cup butter

1 cup sharp New York State cheese, grated

1 tsp. salt

1/4 tsp. cayenne pepper

1 cup plain flour

Pecan halves Cream butter, cheese, salt and pepper. Add flour and work gently into a stiff dough. When ready to bake, roll into small balls and press half pecan on each ball to flatten. Place on cookie sheet and bake 15 minutes at 350 degrees.

Needless to say, we all enjoyed a wonderful Thanksgiving Day. We were able to visit with my family later that day. Then on Friday, Ashley came to visit with Annette and Lee. Look at these two little angels!!

Christmas Stockings

As we now get ready for Christmas, it is time to get their Christmas stockings finished and hung on the mantle. I am almost done!!! I was looking around on Ravelry a few days ago and found what looks like a pattern that is VERY close to these stockings. It is called 1945 Christmas Stocking and can be downloaded for free. Our family's rendition of these stockings leaves out the band with features "little people", but they are very similar. Check out the link if you're interested. Here's the beginning. . .

the middle . . . and the end!!! Getting down to the toe. I will add the names in duplicate stitch in the white band before sewing up the back of the stocking. I am thinking of all the many things that I have to be thankful for, especially my family and friends who make everyday special. I am looking forward to a very special holiday season. Fun November Weekend

This weekend Philip and I enjoyed an opportunity to babysit with Annette and Lee and give David and Ashley a chance to go to Carolina/Florida football game. We can definitely see these babies changing in just 2 weeks. They are on the verge of "smiling" and are much more alert and focused. They are two little sweethearts - - I had to make another video!!

Fun quick project: 4 skeins and size 11 needles. Simple ribbed pattern . . .

I used pattern for Baby Alpaca Grande Vest by Plymouth Yarn.

Now that I've had a quick, fun project it's time to focus on getting some things ready for the holidays. I had begun Christmas stockings for Annette and Lee quite some time ago. I thought I was nearly finished with the second one , only to learn that I had only worked about one inch down on stocking number two. I picked it back up, so I can get them finished in time to hang for Santa. The intarsia is going much better (and faster) this time. Practice does help with this. The name will eventually go in the white band - duplicate stitch. More to follow!!

Great Grands Visit the Twins

Last weekend, before I ended my visit in Aiken, Momma, Daddy,and Aunt Cathy came by to see Annette and Lee. They were driving back to Ridgeland from the Clemson football game.

Fall Breakfast

Earlier in the day we made a yummy breakfast. So many wonderful friends were bringing great things for dinner, we had eaten light breakfast all week . I decided to splurge a little on Sunday morning: we had sauage casserole and pumpkin muffins. It was a nice treat!

The sausage casserole was a recipe from food network. One of those things you can make the evening before and refrigerate until time to bake. I used regular white bread and left out the green onions.

Then there were those yummy pumpkin muffins with cream cheese filling. I only changed the type of oil. I used canola oil instead of olive oil. After the recipe is completed . . . fill muffin cups about one-half full.

Then add 1-2 teaspoons of cream cheese mixture.

Then top with a little of the brown sugar - cinnamon crumbs.

Voila!! The finished product . . . I'll definitely be making these again.

Knitting Babies have to sleep sometime . . . I was finally able to finish Annette's and Lee's baby blankets. Here is Annette's being blocked.

I have enjoyed these long projects for the babies, but have to admit that I am REALLY excited about being done with these special blankets. I can't wait to get started with a few shorter projects I have been eyeing for quite some time.

My visit to Aiken would not have been complete without visiting Barbara Sue Brodie's wonderful knitting and needlework shop on Hayne St. She was having an October birthday celebration for the shop and there were just a few things that I couldn't resist! Falling in Love

I have been visiting Ashley and David to help with the babies the past few days. I have so many exciting things to post about. We have been busy with all things baby x2.

Ashley wanted to let Annette and Lee spend some close play time together this afternoon. The video is only a few seconds, but is amazing to me how they feel the presence of one another and interact with one another.

I am so excited to share our families great news!! Ashley and David welcomed their baby girl and baby boy on September 28, 2009. Mom and babies are all doing well.

High Tide and Tailgating

"He hath made every thing beautiful in his time. " Ecclesiastes I am always in awe of the beauty of high tide! Just had to share a picture of "high tide" this morning. Later today we'll be tailgating before the Gamecocks kick-off against Florida Atlantic at Williams Brice Stadium.

I've been wanting to make this Cornbread Salad for a while now. This seems like a great opportunity - hope it will be a crowd-pleaser!

The recipe is an adaptation from Cornbread Salad in one of our favorite local cookbooks: Full Moon, High Tide. Begin with a layer of chopped lettuce and mixed vegetables. I used tomatoes, corn, bell pepper, cucumbers, green onions, and black beans. Many of the recipes I scanned called for pinto beans - I just like black beans better. Take your pick! Then there is a layer of crumbled cornbread. Use your favorite recipe. I used "always dependable and quick" - Jiffy Cornbread. Baked, cooled, and coarsely crumbled. Next is a layer of dressing: This one is a bit fat-laden. 16 oz. reduced fat sour cream, 1 cup mayonnaise, and 1 packet of Hidden Valley Ranch Dressing Mix (original). Last, but not least, grated cheddar cheese and crumbled crispy bacon!! (Layer everything twice.) Refrigerate!!

Little Cabin in the Woods

Hope everyone had a great Labor Day Weekend!! We were able to spend some time in Cashiers, N. C. in this little cabin in the woods . . . (That song we learned in kindergarten kept popping into my head . . . "Little cabin in the woods . . . little man by the window stood . . . saw a rabbit hopping by . . . frightened as could be. Help me! Help me! Help! he cried . . . or the hunter will shoot me dead. . . Little rabbit come inside . . . safely to abide." Pretty heavy plot for preschoolers. Anyway . . . we had a great weekend. Philip and Amanda came on Sunday. Philip was our personal trail guide. We had a nice hike after lunch on the Chatooga Trail in the Nantahala Forest. We hiked down to the river and looked for trout. A few were sighted . . .but we had no fishing tackle. Our trail guide . . . and his assistant . . . A wildflower . . . amidst curled up rhododendrun leaves . . . A little sewing was also accomplished. Baby daygown number one has been smocked! It was really fun to smock again. It has been years since I've smocked. I was fortunate to be able to get "Ready to Smock" gowns from Susie's Ready to Smock. The smocking is done in ecru and adapted from "Heirloom" by Julia Golson. One more to go!! Today I will finish the baby crib skirts!! Another big cheer!! I love the fabric that Ashley picked out. It has a nursery rhyme theme with pictures of all our favorite nursery characters. It is called "Over the Moon". (Margarita Cushing - 5th Avenue Designs for Covington) And yes, the knitting continues . . .but those blankets still have a way to go!! I still can't imagine where the summer has gone. I'm never quite ready to give it up. One more burst of bloom from some of the plants . . . like this bottlebrush . . .

I do admit that it's exciting to watch some of the camellias begin to put on flower buds. The weather is a little cooler. As you can see, I'm having to convince myself that this is a good

thing. . . . I can't wait 'til next summer!!

July Reprise (a little late!)

July came and left in a flash! Here's a quick summary of what has kept me so busy . . . . . WARNING: LOTS OF PICTURES!

Edisto Get-a-Way

Gee!! The summer is so busy, I'm not doing a very good blogging job. Time to catch up!

Last Wednesday Philip and I had a great boat trip to Edisto Island to visit our long-time friends the Grays. Their family was vacationing there for the week. I had not seen them in quite a while and it was a wonderful reunion. The boat trip was great with smooth waters, no storms! We pulled out the charts and followed the intracoastal waterway from Beaufort to Edisto.

I love the beach and had been wishing for a day at the beach. Lisa and I got to catch up on all our family news while enjoying the sand and surf!! She was able to give me an update on many old acquaintances from Columbia as well. It was great to have this day of relaxation!

Philip took the fixin's for Frogmore Stew (shrimp, sausage, and corn) and made everyone a wonderful lowcountry lunch.

Late in the afternoon we headed back home. We saw a few dark clouds, but no lightening!! Yeah!!

Home, sweet home!! What a great day!!

We had a great visit with Philip, Jr. earlier in the month for his birthday!!

Also Ashley and David were here last weekend. They have found out that the twins are going to be a girl and a boy!! We are so excited at this news!!

I have decided that the Breeze Baby Blanket will be for Baby Girl and I'll make a simpler (more masculine) blanket for Baby Boy. Ashley opted for Baby Boy's blanket to be blue. We found some beautiful Rowan Handknit Cotton at Barbara Sue Brodie's in Aiken, SC. I would call this a dusty blue - shade 239.

Baby Aspen Hat

Philip thinks this little baby hat will look great when the new babies take to the slopes at Aspen! It is a cute little hat from Susan B. Anderson's collection "Pure and Sweet Layette". I used one strand each of Rowan kidsilk haze and Rowan Purelife. I was able to finish it in one day . . . which is exeptional for me. You can be sure another one will follow. I can't make this picture turn in the right direction, so here's the "upside down" hat . . . I love the little top knot!!

Blackberry Jam

Philip and I took a short road trip today. We've been wanting to visit the Bamboo Farm near Savannah, Ga. It is owned by the University of Georgia and is comprised of several garden displays (including bamboo), as well as pick-your-own strawberry and blackberry fields. We saw lots of bamboo . . .

and a field of blackberries. . .

We picked about 2 gallons of big, beautiful berries and brought them home to make some jam.Until last year, we have always mashed the berries by hand, with a strainer to remove the pulp and seeds. Last year we decided to try this electric juicer. It really helps make this project much less time consuming. (And none of us have any time to waste!)

I forgot to take a picture of the jam boiling on the cook-top! That's when the juice, sugar, and SURE-JELL (pectin) begin to boil and after exactly one minute we hurriedly have to ladle the hot liquid into the prepared jars and tighten the lids . . . anticipating the "pop" when the lids seal. Voila . . .

This has become somewhat of a family tradition. Every June we anticipate the blackberries ripening so we can fill up the jars again for the next year. Now the blackberry jam will come out of the cabinet to slather on biscuits, toast, or perhaps an English muffin. I really recommend a trip to the Bamboo Farm for all the plant lovers around. They anticipate having blackberries to pick until mid-July. Check out their web-site and give them a call to be sure the fields are open.

Lovin' Spring

I've been busy, busy with gardening, knitting, cooking, and trying to stay caught up with housework. I was grateful to have a few days off from the office last week. Philip and I planted some new plants in the yard. I am really enjoying the blooms on the magnolias and hydrangeas this month.

Work is progressing on the green baby blanket and baby socks (pair #2) is coming along for Beautiful Baby B.

Ashley and David were able to spend some time with us last weekend. We were able to enjoy a short boat ride on a beautiful Saturday afternoon.

It has been quite windy and cool with the "tropical depression" off the coast (for days and days!). The wind has been gusting for 2-3 days and rain is in the forecast through the weekend.

I actually had to turn on the heat for a few minutes last night . . . that is really strange for May! Here are a few more pictures to remind me that it really is spring!!

We planted some coneflowers, foxglove, Lily of the Nile, and two oakleaf hydrangeas. Will get some pictures soon as the wind calms down.

Two Down . . . Two To Go

Philip and I had a fun weekend travelling to Anderson, S. C. to visit with friends and enjoy their Kentucky Derby party!! They did it up "right" with mint juleps, lots of roses, and fabulous food and entertainment. I do not claim to be a horse enthusiast, but I have to admit that it was an exciting two minutes . . . I love those "come-from-behind winners"! The weekend was not ALL about horses!! I made my first pair of baby bootees!! I think they are precious and can't wait to make pair #2 for beautiful baby #2. (Did I mention that Ashley and David are expecting twins?) I used a combination of Rowan Milk Cotton DK and Rowan Kidsilk Haze - one strand of each held together. I used Susan B. Anderson's pattern for booties found in her book Itty Bitty Nursery. This book has some really cute baby things . . . I suspect you'll be seeing more of her designs on my blog.

April is flying by!!! I thought I would update the recent ABC's of my life! Food: Friday I tried two new recipes that I think you all shoud give a try. They were both great! One is from The Pioneer Woman for Roasted Potato Wedges. We had this Friday night with a little steak and artichoke. They are simple, but flavorful. Crispy on the outside, tender on the inside. I also tried a recipe from Smitten Kitchen for Chocolate Caramel Crack(ers)! The "crack" is appropriate - this is really addicting stuff. It was a great snack to take along to the Heritage Golf Tournament on Saturday. Thankfully, we did some walking to process some of the calories. I'm getting out of "alphbetical order", but below is a photo from the Heritage Golf Tournament at Harbour Town. A view from one of the skyboxes looking out over Calibogue Sound. Lots of beautiful weather, people, boats, . . . and a little golf! It was a very nice day on Hilton Head Island. So. . . "G" could stand for "golf", but today it stands for grandma! I am so very excited that Ashley and David are expecting . . . and Philip and I will be grandparents! We are very happy for them. I am already planning knitting and sewing for all things "baby". Of course, this gives me much joy! The first project is this beautiful lacey blanket in Premiere by Classic Elite Yarns. This is a beautiful mint green and as mentioned on a previous post . . . very soft! It will have a knitted or crocheted border. The pattern is Breeze Lace Baby Blanket by Karabella Yarns. Here's a close up!

I have to mention that I checked out Brooklyn Tweed's latest post on some of his "baby knitting". As always, I think his things are beautiful and inspiring. I especially like the lacey bonnet. I hope everyone enjoys the weekend!

We had a nice visit in Aiken this weekend with Ashley and David. Their home renovation is coming along. We could see big changes since our last visit! The drive gave me a chance to get back to work on the Christmas stocking. It is almost finished! This has been a big learning project for someone who has not worked with intarsia or made a sock. I know there is room to improve on my technique, but I'm pretty well pleased so far. I have "turned the heel" and we're coming down on the toe. Not many rows left . . .

Ashley took me to the LYS : Barbara Sue Brodie's Needleworks in downtown Aiken, S. C.

I really liked the shop and the ladies were VERY helpful. All the yarns are arranged according to color. I had not been in a shop arranged this way . . . what a beautiful rainbow of colors and fiber!

I could have spent hours in there. They were getting close to closing time, but did not rush us at all. There were so many great options for a new project. . . we found this luscious light mint green yarn by Classic Elite : Premiere. It is 50/50 Pima Cotton and Tensel. I have plans for a lacy blanket. More to come on that!

This shop also has an abundance of needlepoint canvas and fiber. What a find!

Blue Bedroom

Finally, I find time to write this post on the blue bedroom project. The goal was to make a bedskirt and two Euro-shams to add some interest to this otherwise boring bed.

Ashley found this fabric for me. It is made by Braemore textiles. I haven't been able to find the name of this pattern.

I made the gathered bedskirt in 3 panels and used bedskirt pins to attach the panels to the top of the boxspring. I have found this to be very easy and provides flexibility so that the length doesn't have to be "exact".

Look at this mess!

The Euro-shams are 26" sqares with 4" ruffle and basic cording. Here I am attaching the cording to the top side of the pillow.

One good turn deserves another. So now I'm looking for just the right artwork for the wall above the headboard. And . . . thinking that a duvet would be nice. However, I still think this is a good start to putting this room together.

Any suggestions?

Busy Weekend

I was out of the office on Friday and devoted most of the day to working on the pillow covers for the blue bedroom. One done, and the other is close. I've only broken 3 sewing machine needles so far. No wonder I procrastinated on this project for so long!

I did some mending and button sewing. Finally got the buttons on the Baby Surprise Jacket. Not to bore you with one more picture, but here is a proper picture with the buttons. Yeah!

Philip and I took a little time-out in Charleston on Saturday and Sunday to celebrate our anniversary (number 31 - but who's counting?). We enjoyed the "camellia walk" at Middleton Gardens. The guide was very informative and the camellia "trees" were amazing. Some of these camellias were brought to the Middleton's from France and planted in the 1700's. There is also a "new garden" of camellias that was planted in the 1930's. It is like walking through a camellia forest. I had never visited there before. It was worth the trip. In about 2 weeks the azaleas will be in full bloom. I highly recommend a visit if you're a plant-lover.

The picture below shows one of the original four camellias brought from France and planted in the 1700's. The plant was damaged by Hurricane Hugo and has been reduced to about one-third the size it had been.

We also visited Hyam's Nursery on James Island. (They don't have a website.) This is also a wonderful place to visit (and buy plants) for those who get excited over springtime and planting.

We purchased a wire basket to repot our Staghorn Fern. He has outgrown his little orchid box. These ferns are so peculiar that I didn't quite know what to do with him, so I decided to try a larger basket with a liner. I planted him in a 50/50 mixture of spagnum moss and potting soil. Hope he likes his new home.

We are back home now and I intend to get the other pillow cover finished pronto!! I'm ready to put up the sewing machine for a while - I better get a few new needles, too!

A HUGE HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my Dad!!! We celebrated his 76th birthday last night here at Chechessee with spaghetti dinner and birthday cake. This is the Terrific Tiger Birthday Cake that MaryGrace made for her grandaddy. She is a talented baker . . . Bakerella watch out!!

One more beautiful camellia, Nuccio's Gem.

Hello Spring!!! We found some yellow jessamine in the yard this past weekend, the azaleas are blooming, and we've had a few beautiful days with highs in the 80's.

I am more convinced than ever, how "down" I get in the winter. A few days of warm weather and sunshine, and I feel like new. More energy. . . it sure is great. Such weird things get me excited . . . like seeing new growth on the ferns and the plumbago that I thought had been killed by the cold weather.

I had a great day - very relaxing and very productive. First, I had a follow-up with the orthopedist. My fibula has healed and I can gradually resume activities. (Thanks once again to all who helped me out over the last 2 months . . . I am so fortunate to have so many wonderful family members and friends!)

I ran a few errands, then spent a few hours relaxing on the dock, enjoying the sun, watching the porpoises, and reading/knitting. After getting in the proper frame of mind, I came in to work on a sewing project that I have put off for months. I am making a bedskirt and pillow shams for the blue bedroom. The fabric is a floral with some blue flowers on a cream background.

The bedskirt is done, I will wait and post pictures after the pillows are done.

Pink and White Surprise

I am finally finished (minus buttons) with the ever-entertaining Baby Surprise Jacket. This is my second BSJ. I learned a few things with this one. 1) Gauge is VERY important to the size of the finished garmet - surprise! surprise! My gauge was about 7 stitches per inch which yields about a 12month size (my estimate). I will use this for a baby gift. It's a good thing babies grow. 2) I decided to use some striping in this because I realized that I would not have enough yarn to complete the project in the original cream colorway. So, I ordered some pink and placed some stripes - pretty randomly. Alas, I am quite pleased with the result. I joined the KAL at Ravelry and picked up a few good ideas there. 3) Changing colors toward the end of the pattern (where 10 stitches are picked up on each side and "stitches on hold" are brought back into the lineup - about row 101 - will place the new color along the bottom of the sweater and along the button bands.

The lighting in this final picture is not great. I will try to replace it with a better picture. The colors in the previous pictures is more accurate. Nevertheless, here is the completed BSJ. I had purchased 3 small pearl buttons. They are too small , once again - due to the gauge. I will find some larger ones.

A Few More Blooms

We are still enjoying some of these camellias as they bloom. The camellia above is Jean Clere! This is a japonica camellia that originated in New Zealand and is named for the wife of its propagator Richard Clere. It has a beautiful full peony form and blooms mid-season.

Above is pictured Emperor of Russia. This one is a japonica that also blooms mid-season. Another beauty that performs well in this climate.

Philip has decided to try his hand at grafting. We have a few of these "mini-greenhouses" around the yard. The grafting procedure is akin to surgery, requiring great care for clean cutting instruments and following tried and true procedures. The new graft is housed in this cylinder and covered with a piece of plexiglass, moss, and a brick! This will stay on for at least 2 months before uncovering to be sure the graft has "taken".

As I understand this, one reason for grafting is to propagate the growth of a beautiful (but perhaps slow-growing) variety on "root stock" from a plant that is more hearty, rapid-growing, and has better tolerance for the growing conditions of the area. Another reason for grafting is to propagate a plant that is not commercially available. A cutting may be taken from a desired species and grafted to produce a new plant.

Update on knitting projects:

The Baby Surprise Jacket and the Christmas Stocking knitting projects are progressing. I am waiting for a little pink cotton cashmere to arive in the mail to add in for stripes in the BSJ. The size is going to be larger than I expected and will require more yarn than I had on hand. I think the pink will be perfect to add a little interest. Will post a picture as soon as we get a little pink going .

Mending

I am so happy to tell you that I got a good progress report from the orthopedic surgeon today. I had more xrays taken and you can see the new bone forming in the fractured area. The ankle parts are still in good alignment. So this is going well. I am to wear the lovely boot for another week and then transition into a much less obtrusive ankle brace. I can wear the ankle brace with shoes . . . AND with the ankle brace . . . I can drive!!!! Definitely, good news!!

After my doctor's appointment, Philip and I had a chance to check out some beautiful old camellia gardens in Savannah. We were so amazed at how old, mature, and beautiful some of these trees are. We came home and admired our own few specimens. This is one called Georgia National Fair. You can see a little cold damage on a few of the petals, but still very pretty.

Another one we found blooming today is one of favorites: Frank Houser variegated. This is a reticulata which has bigger blooms than the japonicas.

I know I need to be working on other knitting projects that are already begging for attention, but I felt the need to have one more item in my baby gift stash. So I found some Debbie Bliss Cotton Cashmereand cast on Baby Surprise Jacket #2. This is a pretty cream color. This is pattern is always fascinating to watch evolve. Too early to tell much here, but we will disect it as we progress. I'm hoping to find some pretty feminine buttons for the ending.

Hemlock Ring - FO

At last, at last the Hemlock Ring Blanket is finished. Totally done. Blocked. In my lap as I write this post. I have read about this a few times, but it is astonishing how different the size, texture, and appearance of the blanket looks after blocking. Here's a picture of the blocking. I blocked it on a queen-size mattress and it still was a little too large for that area. There were a few scallops hanging over the side of the mattress.

Block Blankie

The weekend has gone by quickly, as most do! Sister Cathy was kind enough to help me run some errands yesterday, as I'm still sporting the Herman Munster boot. No driving yet. We are all trying to get ready for the big event in February. Only two more weeks until wedding time for Dow and Melissa. I need to add a few items to the baby gift collection, so I tried Block Blankie by Corrina Ferguson. I used the Muench Big Baby on size 13 needles. Colorway 5503 which is bluish-green/yellow. The yarn is really thick and soft. This pattern works up very quickly -and is a great size for a baby carrier or stroller blanket. I've also started on the Christmas stocking and slowly trying to learn the technique of intarsia. I think I'm getting the hang of it, but it's difficult to ignore the chaos of the different colors hanging at the back of the work. I'll try to post a picture tomorrow. I've also been intrigued reading all the news about the Bohus Exhibit currently at the American Swedish Institute in Minneapolis, Minnesota. An interesting history of this knitting style can be found on this blog. Here's a small sample of bohus collars. I would love to take a class on this technique.

Potpourri

I'm coming to the end of my "time-out" from this broken leg. If all goes well, I will return to work for half-days beginning tomorrow. I am so very grateful for all the care and concern of so many friends and family members for helping this time go by so smoothly and so quickly.

You have all kept me well-fed and well-entertained. The meals have been delicious, the cards and phone calls have boosted my spirits. I have enjoyed lots of knitting, time on the internet and ravelry, and quite a few good bridge games. My nieces, Meccay, MaryGrace, and Joannie visited yesterday and brought me this colorful "get well banner". You make me feel very special.

Remember these hand-knit stockings from a previous post? My Aunt Cathy Hightower was kind enough to bring the "archives" of her stocking-making handiwork for me to look through and begin Christmas Stocking 101. I'm not sure I'm ready for this task, but I have a huge desire to learn. Hopefully, that will make me successful.

I have learned that she "wrote" this pattern after studying the Christmas stocking of a friend. (I can usually follow instructions, but I've not advanced to being able to construct the pattern and graphs required to do this.) Needless to say, I'm in great admiration of her ability. These stockings are a family heirloom and we have tremendous gratitude for her labor of love.

Well, we're all tiring of seeing the Hemlock Ring Blanket. I have about 150 more stitches to bind off. As you can see it is still "puffy" and I can't wait to get it blocked. . . though I know it will be a huge task.

Hemlock Update

It's not done yet, but I had to share how beautiful this bind-off is on the Hemlock Ring Blanket.

It's pretty cold here for a few days, high 20's last night!! Time to sit by the fire (with my foot up!) and stay warm with all this wool in my lap as I finish....not a bad way to spend the afternoon!

Interruption

Well, one never knows what's in store from one day 'til the next. Little did I know last Wednesday morning that within the week I would be sporting footwear reminiscent of Herman Munster's weighty boots. (Remember the TV show?) Thankfully, the boot is only on the right foot due to a graceful fall last Wednesday. My right fibula is broken and will take about 4-6 weeks to heal. In the meantime, I am temporarily confined to the couch. I plan to get back to work next week for some short days. I am frustrated to have this unexpected "vacation" but it has been really been comforting to have so many wonderful friends and family members come to my aid. Many thanks to you all for helping me get through this little challenge. The extra "down time" has given me a little chance to enjoy some knitting. The infamous Hemlock Ring Blanket is within 3 rows of being finished. I'm anxious to work on some other projects and , as always, can't wait to cast on something new during this healing process. I will get some pictures posted soon.

January Knitting

January is great for warming up by the fire and knitting while it's cold and dreary outside. One of my New Year's goals is to learn to knit in the "continental" style, which for some is much faster than the "English" method. The continental style consists of holding the working yarn in one's left hand and allowing it to be "picked up" by the right hand needle. I have heard that continental stitchers are called "pickers". I learned and have always knit using the English method where the working yarn is held in the right hand and "thrown" or looped around the right hand needle. More time-consuming because of all the hand/arm movement. Well, I decided a few nights ago while doing a "row" on the Hemlock Ring Blanket (circular round of about 500 stitches - near the end), that this was the perfect time to make myself learn this technique. Repetition of 500 stitches in one round should either spell success or failure! Well, with the help of You tube videos and LOTS of practice, I think I have it! I'm not ready for the speed knitting competition yet, but I can do it at least as fast as I was in the English method. This is very exciting to me, in hopes that I can make more projects in 2009 than in 2008. Click here to watch the video on the speed knitter!" The Hemlock Ring Blanket is within 15 rounds of being completed! It is a growing GIGANTIC mushroom! My first goal for the month is to finish this project. Then at some point I want to get back into the Koigu Jacket that has been sitting for quite awhile. The colors in it are really beautiful and I just need to pick it back up! What you see here is the right front of the jacket. I am modifying it to make it smaller than the one pictured in the link.

I have some other projects planned when time allows: I'd like to make another 3-button wrap in a heavier yarn like Twinkle Chunky.

I'd like to make another Baby Surprise Jacket in white or ecru.

I'd like to make the Block Blankie (scroll down the page) by Corrina Ferguson in Muensch Big Baby Multi.

Sometime soon I also need to get started on a bedskirt for my blue guest bedroom. Fabric is in hand. I just need a long weekend to take the plunge.

Dixieland Jazz

Jammin' with the band! On the last Sunday afternoon of the month Dixieland Jazz is on tap at the Jazz Corner on Hilton Head Island. Many of our familly members were around yesterday to hear my dad perform with the Port Royal Sound Dixieland Jazz Band. Led by my dad's buddy and mentor Steve Rich, the musicians entertained us with familiar tunes like 12th Street Rag, DarkTown Strutters Ball, and When the Saints Go Marching In!!! Daddy's love of music and playing the horn is something we've watched (and heard) for a long time. He is always striving to improve his skills. We are all inspired by his pursuit of his dreams!!Here are a few pictures from the Jazz Corner!! Thanks to ALL the talented musicians for an entertaining Sunday afternoon!!! Christmas 2008

We celebrated the birth of Jesus with much family togetherness and Christmas Eve mass at St. Anthony's in Ridgeland. I am very thankful for all the blessings that we share. I am also thankful that we celebrate the season by getting in touch with those friends and family members who we may not visit with very often. All the cards and remembrances are very special.

We started our holiday festivities with dinner and gifts with the Thomas family at Aunt Brenda's.Tucker roasted a wonderful pork tenderloin and Brenda added all the fixins'. I think Philip, jr. enjoyed the macaroni the most!

I also want to share Philip's latest camellia bloom Tama Americana which is an early bloomer. It is unique with its rose-splashed white petals.

Noro Rocks!!!

Some of my favorite yarns are those made by Noro. This name is synonymous with beautiful hand-dyed fiber that is bursting with color. My most recent project with this yarn is the "Striped Noro Scarf" by Jared Flood. See post of 4/30/2007.

I'm using Noro Kureyon in colorways 233, 220, and 40. It is a simple 1x1 rib pattern with color change every 2 rows. It is coming along very quickly and should be done in time for a Christmas gift.

I was hugely inspired by seeing these on Yarn Harlot and Brooklyn Tweed. Working on this has been pretty addicting. It is hard to put down with those colors changing all the time.

The first project I undertook using Noro was a modification of Lady Eleanor Entrelac Stole by Kathleen Power Johnson. It is in the book Scarf Style. The most intriquing part of this project was learning how to do entrelac. It was a mindbender at first, but became much easier after a few repeats. This is one of my favorite scarves!

Ashley liked this scarf and I did a repeat in a different colorway.

Ashley took a few nice pictures of her scarf. You can see how interesting the color changes are! Last, but not least, is the Circle Vest by Elaine Eskesen. This pattern is in Silk Knits. I used Noro Silk Garden for this project in colorway 264. This pattern was really mesmerizing and a lot of fun to watch evolve.

Thanksgiving Celebration

We had a wonderful Thanksgiving celebration at the family farm in Grays. The Thomas family gathered for the traditional feast with many thanks for all our blessings.

This year, after the feast, Philip took as on a hay ride through the forest to see some wild animals. The adults enjoyed this as much as the kids. Here we are getting ready for the fun.

I didn't get a great shot, but I think that's a turkey in that clearing ....and there's a bobcat!!!

We also caught a glimpse of a deer, an otter, and some ducks in the pond.

Elizabeth is content after all the food and fun!

After cleaning up at Grays, we went to the Nimmer Family gathering at Bailey's. My sister Cathy and husband Phil had been entertaining my family. We joined them late in the afternoon to visit and eat some yummy leftovers.

We are excited to see our camellia bushes with many blooms. A few are beginning to show color...and even a first bloom!!! Philip has worked really hard to fertilize, water, and prevent (or treat) "scale" .

Well, as football goes, we definitely entered enemy territory on Saturday, Nov. 15 when the USC Gamecocks travelled to Gainsville to take on the Florida Gators. Football and Barbecue

One of our favorite fall activities is watching college football. We had a great time tailgating at 'The Shed" in Columbia this past weekend for the South Carolina vs Arkansas game. Everyone arrived early for the 1 p.m. game to enjoy Philip's ribs. As you can see it takes much concentration and precision to get it right! Philip is basting the ribs as Uncle Mike looks on.

The crowd was well pleased!! The ribs were tender and juicy - a great prelude to a great game - Carolina topped Arkansas!! Thanks to all the other cooks, too for the awesome tailgate- potato salad, slaw, deviled eggs, brownies, shrimp kabobs, Mexican dip..... I can't remember it all, but it was surely enjoyed!!!

The car ride allowed some good knitting time. I'm about half-way through the Hemlock Rink Blanket. We'll be taking the road trip to Florida this weekend. Gamecocks will face a big challenge in Gatorland. Looking forward to going down to Jacksonville on Friday!!

Baby (or Bear) Cocoon

I was excited today to finish the little cocoon that is hands down the fastest project I have ever done. Ashley was anxious to get her hands on it, so that she can use it for photography. I needed a model, so baby bear had to do! It is really simple, just a large sock with a collar of sorts. But is surely is nice to have something finished so quickly! I love the Araucania Aysen. So, it's back to the Hemlock Ring Blanket (and other works in progress)!!! .

Imagination

Dr. Seuss First of all a little quiz this morning: What could taste better than these rich dark chocolatey cupcakes? Well, a little imagination and the answer is simple! That would be rich dark chocolatey cupcakes spread with peanut butter frosting and garnished with Reese's Cup sprinkles!!! Pretty rich, though. I thought these would be a yummy treat for tailgaiting tomorrow when we travel up to Columbia to watch the Gamecocks take on the Tennessee Vols. I found the recipe on the Food Network and thought it was worth a try. The results are pretty awesome. The Hemlock Rink Blanket is progressing. You can begin to see the "feather and fan" portion . It is a little challenging to photograph due to knitting in the round. It looks like a big puffy mushroom, getting larger all the time. .

As we knitters know, one cannot have too many projects underway at the same time! Ashley has enticed my to start (and finish quickly) a baby "cocoon" that she will use with infant . photography. She has chosen a few yarns for these cocoons. The first is Aysen from Araucania. She has another Rowan yarn for me that I haven't seen yet. As in other items, Ashley has excellant taste in yarn. I can't wait to see her first photos using the cocoons. I just got started on the first cocoon last night. It will be a quick project. I love to see these unique colors unfold as the knitting progresses. Have a safe and happy Halloween!!!!

We had such a good time getting ready for Melissa and Dow's party. There was cleaning, cooking, flower arranging and pumpkin carving. Ashley, Teri, Marianna, Cathy and I had fun on Friday night putting the plan into action.

I think I'll let this post be about the pictures. We hope everyone had a great time!!!!

Well the fun is over. Now I can focus a little attention on the Hemlock Ring Blanket. Also I was able to get a pattern for a baby cocoon that Ashley is anxious to use for infant photography.

We are having fun looking for just the right yarn to get started with. I think there are some beautiful choices with Malabrigo chunky . This should be a quick (and fun!) project.

Anticipation

It is a beautiful fall day on the river. This Wednesday finds us scurrying about getting the house and yard all cleaned up as we prepare for a little celebration this weekend. We are hosting a party for my nephew and godchild, Dow, and his fiance' Melissa. There is much excitement in the air as we start to celebrate their upcoming wedding in February. While outside this morning I noticed that the satsumas are ripening in the backyard. And we have one late-blooming angel trumpet on the deck!!! I'll have more pictures after we decorate, but I noticed that these mums at the doorsteps are about to burst.

I anticipate lots of fun for Dow and Melissa on Saturday night.....as we celebrate "fall"ing in love!!

Knitting will be on the back burner for a few days. Hemlock ring blanket is a little slow. I had to "unknit" a few rows when I realized the stitch count was wrong. Silly mistake on a yarn over - now corrected. Can't wait to get back to it!

I'm also anticipating having Philip, jr. and Ashley and David here with us for the weekend party.

It will be great to catch up on all their activities.

Work and Play

"We do not stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing." Anon This has been a "call" weekend. So I've gotten to work some and play some. Along the lines of work, I'd like to remind all my friends and family that NOW is the time to get your flu vaccine. No, flu vaccine will not make you sick. If you've ever had the flu, then you'll be sure not to forget. The other reminder is that October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Please be sure that you have had your yearly mammogram and any other appropriate cancer screening. It is too easy to put this off. I have finally finished the longtime project of ruffled sweater (see previous post). The best part is that I can now start some other projects. I have wanted to knit Jared Flood's Hemlock Ring Blanket for at least a year now. It is officially on the needles! Just getting started, but can hardly wait to get a few minutes to work on this. I'm using Cascade Eco Wool - taupe. This is the warmest, softest wool. This blanket is going to be really nice to snuggle up with on a cold winter night. I hope this project goes quickly!!!

"He hath made everything beautiful in His time." Ecclesiastes We're having a full moon this week, so we get to enjoy some unusually high tides. The river is always beautiful, but these spring tides with water up in the marsh are my favorite site. We welcomed two new baby camellias to the river yesterday. These plants are a new hybrid called Dancing Flame. Philip is anxious to get them planted and watch them grow.

I did get in a little sewing/knitting time yesterday and after many, many months finally finished the lace and ruffle sweater (Adrienne Vittadini, spring 2005). Yarn is Diana, also by A. Vittadini. I was very frustrated before adding the ruffle, and ready to quit because it had NO shape. The ruffle helped a lot to provide a little structure, but it is still pretty "drapey". Once I get it blocked properly, we'll get another picture.

Well, a very "full" day ended with a "full" moon rising over the Chechessee. Here I am with my friend Teri enjoying a little boat cruise as the sun sets and the moon "rises".

I thought the best way to post my first entry would be to include a picture of the Chechessee River at sunrise. Part of what I have to share is the pure beauty of the place where we are so lucky to call home.

Thanks so much to Ashley for helping me launch this blog. This is a very new challenge for little pix, but I'm excited about this journal and sharing what is special to me!

It is "wonderful Wednesday"!! (usually my day off) so I'm looking forward to running errands and catching up around the house. If I'm lucky, I'll have time to work on finishing a sweater that I've been knitting for quite some time -like 2 years!! I hate to admit that, but then I don't get much time to devote to this hobby. Also, I have to admit that there are quite a few co-existing projects.

The blue wrap posted by Ashley is 3button wrap by Keely Stuever. Took me all summer, but it is very easy knitting for a nice addition to the wardrobe. The yarn is from Aruacania in a beautiful blue-purple colorway.

Hey ya'll! This is actually Ashley, Pixie's daughter, and I am showing my mom how to do the whole "blog thing." Yes, mom has wanted a blog for quite some time now and it's going to be great! She has so many GREAT things to share - she is an awesome mom, cook, knitter, and she can sew just about anything!
